Serving as temporary captain aboard Honeydew, a 90ft, 195GT dive charter vessel based in Stromness, in the remote Orkney Islands, was one of our most unique assignments. Operating in the cold, fast-changing waters of Scotland’s far north requires experience, precision, and a deep respect for the sea—especially when the mission involves guiding cold-water divers to some of the most iconic wreck sites in the world.
From Honeydew’s helm, we led weekly expedition dives to the legendary scuttled German fleet of World War I lying within the depths of Scapa Flow. Strong tides, narrow tidal windows, unpredictable weather systems, and heavy dive operations demanded seamless coordination and calm command. As certified Rescue Divers ourselves, we were able to support the dive team both from the bridge and in the water when needed, ensuring every descent and ascent was executed safely.
Despite the harsh environment and the complex logistics of running a live-aboard dive vessel, Honeydew performed beautifully under our command. Every diver returned with unforgettable memories, and every operation was completed safely, professionally, and without a single incident.
A proud chapter in our captaincy career—combining seamanship, rescue diving expertise, and the raw, historic drama of Scotland’s northern seas.
